BIO

David Sebastian Lopez Restrepo was born, and grew up, in Colombia, where he studied art. His curriculum as a performance artist began when he left his country fourteen years ago. That is the reason why he consider himself a deteritorialized artist. His identity and his work plays with the role of a person in constant movement and construction. Generally, he uses food, everyday actions and sound as the main material for his performances, and he prioritizes the interactions that happen in the process of doing small and sometimes repetitive everyday life actions. In his practice as an artist, he usually explores the role of the audience in the construction of the performative experience.

His work has been presented in several places, including the Colombian performance art Biennale, in Bogotá, Colombia. Viva art Action in Montreal, Canada and most recently in the Danish National Art Gallery where he developed a sound performance in collaboration with the Italian musician Gianluca Elia.

As curator of performance art, he prioritizes migrant and emergent artists. Since 2017 he organizes and curates a yearly festival in Copenhagen, called Body Landscapes and he have been part of the curatorial team of Nordic Action in The Faroe Islands, Svalbard, Åland and Sweden. During the last year, most of his activities have been forced to move online, therefore he is exploring the relation between artists and audiences under these new circumstances.

Performance Title
The Good Migrant

"I was born and grew up in Colombia, where I also studied arts, but my production as a performance artist begun when I left my country, twelve years ago. That is the reason why I consider myself a deterritorialized artist. My identity, and my work, plays with the role of a person in constant movement and construction.

Generally, I use food, everyday actions and sound as the main material for my performances, and I prioritize the interactions involved in the process of doing small and sometimes repetitive everyday life actions. In my practice as an artist, I have the aims of creation, development and strengthening of the link between performance art, society and other disciplines of art. I wish to generate a dynamic dialogue between art and society, dealing with topics such as migration politics, collective and individual memory, identity, culture, violence and wellness of society.

For this performance, “The good migrant”, I will create an experience by interacting with the audience. I will have a 10liter pot that I fill with potatoes. I will ask the audience for names of migrants that they know and together we will write these names on the potatoes with a gouge. I will cook the potatoes with the names of the migrants and then these potatoes will be consumed by the audience.

Through the performance art and the interaction with audience I wish to instigate a discussion about migration, identity and art as part of the society, empathizing on how the food represents the migrations and in some opportunities products from abroad have saved entire countries from hunger and crisis. By exploring these elements of the migration, I would like to find in the performance art the way to construct a more equalitarian society".
