Stateless Mind Festivals (2019–2023)

This archive traces a series of gatherings that unfolded primarily in Copenhagen, with a satellite activation in Venice in 2022.

The festivals brought together artists across geographies and diasporic contexts, forming temporary communities through performance, moving image, and shared encounters.

They were not fixed events, but evolving situations—shaped by place, presence, and the conditions of exchange.

What remains is not only documentation, but a network of relationships that continues to resonate.

Past Festivals + Origin

Stateless Mind Festivals began as part of Jambatan, a platform grounded in connection across cultures, geographies, and lived experiences.

The name Jambatan—meaning “bridge” in Malay—reflects this approach.

From this foundation, the festivals emerged as spaces for exchange between artists, curators, and communities, particularly across Malaysia and Denmark.

A Festival Reborn

After earlier cross-cultural initiatives, Jambatan reactivated its direction in 2019 with the first Stateless Mind Festival.

Between 2019 and 2023, the festivals unfolded primarily in Copenhagen and Venice, taking shape through exhibitions, performances, conversations, and informal gatherings.

Rather than presenting fixed programs, each iteration responded to its environment — shaped by the people present and the conditions of encounter.

Copenhagen

In Copenhagen, the festivals developed through ongoing dialogue and collaboration.

They brought together artists working across geographies, many shaped by migration, displacement, and layered identities.

The emphasis was not on finished works, but on process — on creating situations where ideas could be shared, tested, and transformed.

Venice (2022)

In 2022, Stateless Mind extended into Venice, unfolding alongside the Venice Biennale as part of a satellite event with PORT Perak.

PORT Perak participated in the Biennale under the theme Pera, Flora and Fauna. Within this context, artists from the Nordic countries, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Malaysia participated in the satellite event under Stateless Mind.

Operating outside national representation, Stateless Mind existed as an alternative presence — one that did not belong to a pavilion, yet moved in proximity to it.

Artists engaged in actions, conversations, and interventions that responded to the environment of the Biennale while remaining independent from its structures.

This moment became a turning point.
